Quick and Easy Photo Organization
My parents recently “gifted” me a pile of old photos from my childhood, many of them duplicates of what my parents have. Those photos, combined with my husbands and any future family pictures were quite a mess. I don’t plan on printing many pictures now that digital storage is so secure and easy, but I do like the idea of having some tangible photos for my daughter. I decided that I needed to wrangle the chaos and get a system in place for family photos. The entire process only took about an hour, and I’m really happy with the end result!
First, I ordered these photo storage boxes from amazon – 1 for my family photos, 1 with my husbands, and 1 for our future photos. I also ordered a large photo box for big printed family photos that we have hanging in our living room.
Then, I began the hard part of actually taming the wild mess. I started by putting on a podcast, pouring a glass of wine, and creating stacks of photos by approximate age. Many of the photos are undated, so I made the following categories:
- 1st year
- Middle School
- High School
I labeled post-it notes, put each photo into one of the piles, and then labeled the white cards that came with the photo box. I then did the same with my husband’s pictures, and put the few printed family photos we have in the 3rd box. All in all, the process took about an hour. It isn’t perfect, but I feel so much better knowing that my photos are organized, and that I have a system for any future printed pictures.
I have these on a shelf in the office closet, but I do like the option to keep them out on a desk or bookshelf. Hearth and Hand at Target also has some adorbale storage boxes that you could definitely double as decoration!
